This genus was introduced to the U.S. from China. The leaf blades are stiff due to high silica content. The leaves are rolled in the bud shoot and the leaf blades are smooth with hairs near the base. Edges of the blades are smooth and the blades are sharply pointed. This species can grow in most types of soil. It is found along the Atlantic Coast and along the Gulf coast to Texas. It grows well in moderately shady areas and is used in golf courses, parks and athletic fields.
